Chapter Twenty-Eight

Ghost

Beads of sweat slid down my back and dripped from my brow. My entire body felt slick, like I had exited a steamy shower without drying off. At night, the thermostat in the bedroom was automatically set to sixty-six degrees. The perfect temperature for sleeping with just enough chill in the air to snuggle beneath a layer of blankets. The oppressive heat that had me wanting to run naked into a snowstorm was the result of too many glasses of wine and the two hundred pounds of male flesh plastered against my side.

Somehow Bishop had managed to encapsulate me with his entire body. Heavy limbs wrapped around me, one hand sprawled across my stomach, while the other was wedged between my thighs. Thick legs tangled with my own. His grip tightened when I tried to move away to gain some space to cool down. I pushed, pulled, elbowed, and even called out his name. Bishop would not budge. It was not until I kicked his shin that his hold finally relaxed. Half-awake, half-asleep, he let go, but still managed to rub his groin against my hip.

Before he got a chance to latch on again, I slipped out of the bed. Grabbing my robe off the hook on the bathroom door, I quietly made my way downstairs.

I was pouring myself a cool glass of water in the kitchen when I noticed the broom propped up against the wall. Leaning back on the counter, barely holding on to the glass shaking in my hand, I considered finishing the job we failed to complete last night. I ended up walking over and plopping down on the sofa instead. It was already after six in the morning, so there was no reason to return to bed, which meant there would be plenty of time to clean up Grandma June’s mess later.

My thoughts returned to the man sleeping upstairs. Bishop had been a great comfort in my time of need, and I was grateful for that, for him. But now I needed space. Time alone to grieve the mother I never knew while also preparing for the fact that I might be the one to take her room at Glen Haven. Would it be hard for Bishop when they locked me away, or would he forget me in a week?

I grabbed the remote and switched on the news broadcast that we never got around to watching.

It was no surprise to see Kendall and Selina preening in front of the camera. Both continuing to interrupt the other in their attempts to steal the spotlight. Boasting about being the ones who had delivered lunch to the board meeting. Overinflating their importance in the strange and deadly events of the day. Even with Mr. Mason’s gag order, they could not resist their chance at two minutes of fame. Though it appeared to have been less than a minute before the report moved on to a more productive interview.

The next person to appear on screen was the executive I had seen vomiting outside the conference room.
